Names (and Bacon pt. 3, or The Continuing Story of Cured Pork Products)

Our baby now has a name, but I can't tell you. It will be revealed later. But those that need to know already know.

We are very confident in our naming method. It worked out exactly right for our cat, Amelia. Her name fits her personality. This was the goal we had in mind by waiting until we met our baby to give her a name. Not only does it have some very distinct family connections and some interesting character, but it fits the way she looks. I know it's old fashioned to not know the sex of the kid because of ultrasounds, but how many genuine surprises do you get in life anymore. Plus, the mystery spurred an exhaustive search for names of all varieties -- Male, Girl and Murl (our word for Male-girl). For months, we had a working list that had some narrowed down selections -- things we could go to in a pinch and not be disappointed. These ideas ultimately led us to the name we have now registered on the birth certificate.

Then again, both my wife and I have a history in our personal lives that includes a certain fluidity of one's moniker. I myself have gone by more than a few names in my time. Most have been nicknames, but one in particular has stuck (can you guess which one?). If history and ancestry mean anything, our kid is likely to choose their own name at some point.

Side Note: the rounds of emails sent out garnered two responses that contained unsolicited references to Bacon. Oddly, and perhaps fittingly, both came from wedding attendants of mine. Bacon-obsessed Chuck offered the random collage of what I think is bacon pie and Ryan offered the name suggestion. Why has there been the odd uptick of bacon related things on the blog. It's now garnered its own category.
