Baby Pictures & Sleep Deprivation
I once had some idea that raising a child had similarities to raising a pet. As a cat owner and father, I can wholeheartedly report they have nothing in common whatsoever. Although I am on latrine duty for both Amelia and Lil Baby Something Something, Amelia has never given me cause to lose this much sleep. Only once did I have to pull an all-nighter with her (an emergency vet visit for some bad constipation, to continue with the scatological tie-ins). I have a new found respect for Amelia, though. She basically takes care of herself. Feeding her is pretty easy, as is the litter box. You just set it up for her to use and she takes care of the rest. Cats are like the Roomba of the domesticated-animal world.
I also once thought that since Heather and I are in the entertainment industry, we knew from long hours, short breaks, and a wacky schedule. In my overly optimistic view, the whole sleep deprivation thing that everyone talks about with newborns would not affect us so greatly. Again, I sit here humbled by my hubris. I've carefully sought to avoid too many correlations with birth and the theatre business, but for those of you who would get it:
Birth was like being in tech, where you get breaks anywhere from every two to eight minutes, but otherwise you are working at full speed with no rehearsal or opportunities to stop and try something again. And "end-of-day" could be any time from right this second to a few days away.
Getting the house ready for a home-birth is like getting the theatre ready for first preview. During most of the run up to the event, the space will look chaotic and dangerous. Somehow, though, by the time the doors open and the audience comes in, the place magically gets cleaned up and organized and one would never think that a few hours ago the place looked like a construction site.

I'm trying to get some baby photos together when I'm not sleep-walking. Hopefully by the weekend there'll be some on Flickr with restrictions that allow only the people I invite to see the pictures. I figure in a world of online child predators, I didn't want to give some sick bastard a reason to go after my kid by indiscriminately offering up pictures of her to the world. Of course, I like to easily share with the not-so-bad people of the world too, so I'm a bit at odds at the moment. I really enjoy Flickr's group pool and map features, but neither are appropriate for baby pics. I may end up going back to the Koday Gallery system. I keep trying to break free of Kodak, but I keep ending up back with them. When they make a good product, they really do it well. I just wish they weren't such a monopoly.

I keep looking in the sky to see if you're sending the baby's name via one of those planes that trails a sign after it.
OMG, she's so perfect. Such a wee little thing. I wish I was there to pinch her.

Thanks so much for the kind thoughts! If you have a Flickr account, you can search for YoshiRobot and try to add me as a contact. Then you can see some of the photos.
