How comforting (plus: More Bacon!)
I usually find it kind of lame to just post something from another blog or news source, but there's so much out there that interesting it's hard not to want to share it. I've been tempted recently by a number of things, but since I've been in a political mood all week, I'll only share two:
How Anti-Intellectualism Is Destroying America
Leave This Child Behind
These seem like ideas that should be opposed, but they are oddly linked in some way. It's oddly comforting, though, when you see in print ideas that you thought you were alone in having. That other people spontaneously share a thought provides one...hope?

In some long overdue Bacon news, check out this link and look for the Maple Bacon Doughnut:
Voodoo Doughnuts
Sadly, they are only in Portland, Oregon (sad unless you live in Portland, that is) and they don't ship them outside of the city. But the next time I'm in Portland, I'm going to have stop there to try this one out. Not that I'm in Portland very often. I've been there a total of once in my life. I also don't often eat doughnuts. I thought I had it good though, being down the block from NYC Doughnut Plant, which makes a better doughnut than any other I've had. They make things like Ksripy Kreme seem utterly quotidian.

Ooo! I'm going to Portland at the end of September. Thanks for the tip.
Those articles were both interesting. I always feel comforted to see people who are challenging assumptions and asking questions of the world.

I was just thinking today about how annoying and destructive the Fox and CNN newscasters are who either pretend to be stupid or are as stupid as they seem because the general American viewer wants things simplified and dumbed down. Much of the banter among hosts is about accusing and denying one or the other is a geek on some subject. It's worse than it used to be and I think having an uncreative, seemingly functionally illiterate president doesn't help.
